NonTraditional Marketing Mash by Omarr Cantú

Non-Traditional Marketing Guru. Social Media Addict. Ad Man. Movie Buff. Live Music Lover. Cigar Aficionado.

Traditional Marketing is Dead. Given this is a bold statement, but it is my belief that with a growing generation of Americans that have become desensitized by the constant bombardment of media the only way to get recognized is by taking a non-traditional approach.

Non-Traditional is the future of the industry, and that's where I come in. I love non-traditional marketing and often come across many original (and not so original) ideas during my travels out in the field. The disciplines discussed will all fall under non-traditional marketing but will include event marketing, field marketing, street marketing, and of course guerrilla marketing. This is a mash of cool ideas that catch my eye that I thought would be worthy to share with you. Enjoy the mash and don't forget to wash your hands.

Master Networker Must Have Tool: WorldCard Mobile App

WorldCard Mobile is one of the coolest iPhone applications I have come across and for the money, can be a pretty sweet little investment for your company's business development. If you are anything like me, I collect business cards at networking events like crazy and they all either end up in my bathroom draw or entry way counter top. I enter what information that I need such as a phone number and then I look like a fool when I have to call the guy asking for his email address because I didn't save all his information the first time. This is an easy solution to organize the clutter and save your contacts information in a quick, efficient way, not to mention its only $5.99 which is a whole heck of a lot cheaper than those business cards scanners that my friends keep raving about.

Here is how it works:
  • Load the Application
  • Take a picture of your new contact's business card
  • Click recognize information
  • Save into your directory
  • Make any needed adjustments like saving a photo of the company logo, etc.
It even has a feature that allows you to capture an email signature and import that directly into your contacts.

I hardly ever give a raving review, but this application deserves it. Check out the LITE version to try it out for free!

Ronald McDonald, Wendy, and The King Eat Undercover at @Hooters

I saw this out of the ordinary commercial and had to find it and share. What makes this non-traditional is that the Hooters has decided to take the gloves off and start swinging to gain market share in the quick service restaurant arena against giants, in order of market share, McDonald's, Wendy's, and Burger King.

Now why has Hooters, a mid-tier fast casual, opted to lower their prices and lower the gloves to take cheap shots at the QSR giants? Easy. Economy. Granted Hooters is pushing the Mouthwatering Burger only on Mondays, but that is even more reason to view them as a force to be reckoned with in the current burger war that has been plaguing QSRs over the course of the last year.

This stunt is designed to upset the continuous flow of the market place on Mondays. I am sure that there will not be many soccer moms toting several young children lining up every Monday evening for dinner, that is not the target demo, however those young men who don't have much cash burning in their wallets would much rather purchase a $5 burger meal form an attractive woman than a clown.

Brands usually refrain from attacking the signature icons of competing brands in order not to seem crass, but Hooters has opted to remain true to their motto, "Delightfully Tacky, Yet Unrefined."

Geo-targeted Guerrilla Marketing with @HurricaneParty's New App

Ok, So I am so excited about finding this new iPhone app that my buddy Glenn Banton turned me on to, check this out.

(download)

Austin based start up company Hurricane Party, has taken geo-targeting to the next level by creating a free iPhone app to help spread the word of social gathering. The Daily Texan explained it well, "Hurricane Party is an iPhone application that helps create a spontaneous social event by allowing the user to broadcast a potential get-together, locate friends, pinpoint event locations and get the ball rolling." The app not only allows you to send out invitations to get people together, but also monitors where people are congregated through its internal geo-targeted maps.

Austin Entertainment e-magazine, Austin Thrillist explains it well, "Start your "hurricane party" by selecting time & location, then choosing guests from people cross-referenced in both your Facebook and phone contacts; your chosen few get a text (to which they'll respond "I'll Be There", "Maybe Stop By" or "Rain Check"), and the party's geo-displayed with a spinning storm image that changes speed and color based on event popularity -- from CAT1 to CAT5, but not LOLCat, because that's so popular it'll level the city. HP also combs your social networks for public events created by other Hurricaners, displaying which of those gatherings your friends will attend, plus real-time wall-style updates -- so you'll know if your friends are actually attending, or just RSVPeasy."

The Daily Texan goes on to explain, "One incentive of using the app is setting up a Hurricane Party with a partner company...where you will get some form of discount for taking a group of friends there. Businesses can also go on the website and initiate an offer for a discount, which can be accessed by any Hurricane Party user.It would be a win-win situation, Price said: The local business gets more customers and the Hurricane Party user gets a discount, as well as some help deciding which local spots to frequent."

With that in mind, from a non-traditional marketing perspective, you can turn this technology on its axis and utilize this monitoring system for event marketing and guerrilla marketing. By having the ability to see where the highest congregation of people are, say for an large event weekend such as Austin City Limits, South by Southwest, North by Northwest, or even Warped tour, you can plan a rapid attack (drive by) marketing blitz for your activated street teams. This would also enable a non-traditional marketing specialists the ability to strategically place any guerrilla marketing stunts, graphics, and collateral to increase the number of impressions gained.

If you can see any other non-traditional marketing uses for this application, please share your thoughts below!
